    Beer shortage

ENGLAND fans face a beer drought in Cologne after Scotland’s Tartan Army fans drank bars dry - knocking back a million pints in three days.

A record-breaking army of at least 50,000Three Lions supportershave begun arriving in the historic city for the crunch clash with Slovenia on Tuesday.

But bars are struggling to restock after 100,000 thirsty Auld Enemy drinkers drained the city when theScots’ drew 1-1 draw with Switzerlandlast week.

A manager at Cologne’s Corkonian Irish pub, on the main Alter Markt square, said: “The Scotland fans drank everything – beer, Guinness and vodka. Our cellar was emptied.

“It was the same at other bars, with record beer sales - even more than carnival.

“Now we’re all now trying to get more deliveries from breweries to get drinks for England fans.”

    Rice warns pundits

DECLAN RICE urged England's critics to think before they speak.

Harry Kanereminded the likes of Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer that they never won anything in a Three Lions shirt.

Asked if he was disappointed with the criticism ofEngland'sEuro 2024campaign, hetold ITV: “No, I’m not disappointed because I’ve played football long enough now, I know how they work.

“That’s why I really do not get bothered about it at all.

“Look, they’re entitled to their opinion, they’re on the TV. They’re saying whatever they want.

“I know some of them personally, they’re great guys, but like I said, they’ve been in our shoes as well.

“Sometimes just to have that thought of process, just before they speak that they have been where I’m sat and where our other players have sat and not done well at tournaments.

“So look… I don’t know why we feel like it’s such a negative thing. We’re talking like we’re going out the tournament here.

“We’re top of the group, we need to stay positive, stay upbeat.

“Let’s have some positivity going into games.

“Let’s give players the best confidence in the world. Your players like your Phil Fodens, your [Bukayo] Sakas, your Jude Bellinghams. Tell them they’re the best players in the world.

“Make them read that and think, ‘I’m going to go out there and perform and give it absolutely everything’.

“Rather than reading the negative comments, [having it] sitting on their mind and then thinking that they can’t play a certain way. That’s the way I think about it.

“I’m sure we have enough of them people as well which is good.”

    Kane defends form

HARRY KANE has launched a bullish defence of his own form and fitness.

He said: “In the games at this tournament I’ve felt as fit as I have all season.

“I know I came off in the second game but that was down to the manager wanting to see something different and freshening up the front players.

“From my point of view I am fit, I am getting better and better in each game.

“In previous tournaments I’ve spoken about trying to make sure you come into your peak for the knockouts. Time will tell but it’s important to go into this knockout stage feeling 100 per cent and I feel I am there.

“Have I played the best that I know I can? No. But I didn’t score in the group stage at the World Cup, I didn’t score in the group stage at the lastEuros.

“So from that point of view, it’s a bonus to be one goal ahead.”

    Game suspended

SCOTLAND'S game against Hungary was paused after a potentially serious injury to Barnabas Varga.

The striker collided with Scottish No1 Angus Gunn and medics rushed onto the field to help him.

Sheets were brought out to cover Varga with several team-mates including Dominik Szoboszlai seen in tears.

The forward was carried off the field on a stretcher as fans applauded in the hope he will be OK.

Martin Adam came onto the field to replace Varga, 29, who plays for Ferencvaros in his homeland.

The game was paused for five minutes before resuming after a VAR check for a potential penalty was waved away.

    Harry Kane hits back

Harry Kane has launched a bullish defence of his own form and fitness.

The England skipper and all-time record scorer has been widely criticised for sub-standard performances against Serbia and Denmark in his side’s opening two group matches.

But Kane insists he is "as fit as I’ve been all season" - and pointed out that he has scored one more goal than at this stage in England’s previous two tournaments.

Kane was substituted midway through the second half of Thursday’s 1-1 draw with Denmark, despite having opened the scoring.

But in response to criticism of his overall contributions, after a back injury at the end of the domestic season, Kane insists he feels as good as he did while scoring 44 goals in his maiden campaign with Bayern Munich.

In the games at this tournament I’ve felt as fit as I have all season. I know I came off in the second game but that was down to the manager wanting to see something different and freshening up the front players.

From my point of view I am fit, I am getting better and better in each game. In previous tournaments I’ve spoken about trying to make sure you come into your peak for the knockouts. Time will tell but it’s important to go into this knockout stage feeling 100 per cent and I feel I am there.

    Kylian Mbappe's mask

Kylian Mbappe trained in his mask once again but still does not look entirely happy wearing one.

The forward tried two different masks on during the session and, once the contact part had finished, took it off and launched his new kit high into the sky.

Some of the squad ended with a finishing drill in which the busiest man was not the keeper but the coach having to fetch balls from behind the goal so wayward were most of the efforts.

The shootout was won by defender Benjamin Pavard, who looks unlikely to even play a game during the tournament.

    Mbappe back in training

Kylian Mbappe is up and running once more for France after suffering a broken nose.

The French captain, 25, was forced off in their Euros opener against Austria after breaking his nose and was not risked from the bench against the Netherlands.

However, the day after the 0-0 draw with the Dutch in Leipzig, Mbappe scored two goals and laid on two assists in a behind closed doors friendly as they gear up to face Poland.

Les Bleus have now faced Paderborn's Under-21s twice following their matches in Germany - with Didier Dechamps keen to give those who were not involved in the previous night's game a chance to get some match fitness.

Mbappe played the full 60-minute match - with the main purpose being for him to get used to playing with his custom made mask on.

    England raising their game

Phil Foden says the intensity of England training has gone up as Gareth Southgate’s side look to raise their game.

I look around and the characters we have, we always expect more from ourselves. Training has gone up going into this game.

    Trent Alexander-Arnold experiment

England legend Chris Waddle jumped to the defence of Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold and slammed manager Gareth Southgate’s handling of the player.

    Waddle told Genting Casino:

Trent Alexander-Arnold is playing as part of a midfield two, and I don’t understand why Gareth Southgate has made that decision.

Trent has tremendous passing range, and playing for Liverpool, we’ve seen him hit those lovely balls from right-back or when he’s stepped into the midfield.

The difference is he has willing runners that stretch the play. Mo Salah, Darwin, Diaz, they will run all day for him.

At England, there are no runners, so his greatest strength – his passing range – in that midfield role is completely wasted.

He’s playing it simple because he has to – all these England players in front of him, except for [Bukayo] Saka sometimes, want the ball to feet.

Trent’s a wonderful player, but his best attribute is being wasted in this midfield role for England. If we’re going to play Trent in midfield, then Southgate needs to get more runners into his team.

We need a player with the mindset to think ‘when Trent’s on the ball, I'm going to run behind my full back because he’ll find me'

    Nico Williams advice

Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams should join Arsenal over Chelsea this summer, as per Stuart Pearce.

    Pearce toldFooty Accumulators:

For Nico Williams, you’ve got to say that Arsenal will be a better destination for him than Chelsea at this moment in time.

However, it’s down to what the teams want to pay financially in their wage structure and maybe if he’s got one or two friends at individual clubs as well then they’ll talk him round.

Any players in Europe that are young and talented, they’re going to get suitors in the Premier League and often more than one club so it could also be personal preference.

The more talented players we get coming to the Premier League the better and he would be one of them, we’ve got talented players from all over Europe and the world coming and plying their trade here which is excellent.

    Guehi boosts transfer chances

Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi has boosted his chances of a Manchester United move thanks to his impressive displays for England at Euro 2024.

That is according to Stuart Pearce, who told Footy Accumulators:

I think Lisandro Martinez is deemed as the number one central defender for Manchester United but Marc Guehi has done his chances of joining him no harm at Euro 2024.

I think he's had a brilliant season for his club and what he's done in these two games, whenever he steps out for England, I've been quite impressed with him. He has a little bit off pace and he reads the game extremely well.

Physically he's not got big stature for a central defender but I think he makes up for that with his pace and his knowledge of the game.

So he's done himself no harm of landing a big transfer and it'll be no surprise to me if Palace get a lot of interest in him after the Euros.

    Southgate's successor

FORMER England manager Glenn Hoddle believes Gareth Southgate should leave his post whether he wins the Euros or not and has backed Pep Guardiola to succeed him.

"I'd go for Pep. With this crop of players, I think Pep would do wonders with it," he told SunSport exclusively.

"It would cost a lot of money [to bring him in] but he might actually be ready for a bit of international football.

"I'm not so sure he'd want to be Spain's manager, coming from Barcelona.

"He knows this country. Unless he wants to go to another country - [say] Italy, and manage there, or he wants a year off or whatever.

"I think he'd look at all them players and go 'Wow, I could do some damage for them'."
