Rothenbuhler, 59, cheesemaker Hans R. Rothenbuhler was invited to Middlefield Township, Geauga County, in 1956 to be the general manager of the newly formed Middlefield Swiss Cheese Cooperative. He grew up in Switzerland, where he completed seven years schooling and anapprenticeship that led to a diploma as a master cheesemaker. His speciality was Swiss cheese. He was born in France.

He was 59 and lived in Middlefield Township. Mr. Rothenbuhler had immigrated to the United States in 1950. He worked in Cleveland as a retail milk salesman and as a cheesemaker in Brewster, 0. Forming the co-op was the answer to a change in Cleveland health regulations that required milk at farms to be cooled to 55 degrees Fahrenheit instead of 60 degrees.

That meant electrical cooling, which few Amish farms had due to their religious beliefs. An answer was making cheese from milk. The co-op includes other dairy farmers as well as Amish. In March 1983, Mr. Rothenbuhler and his family took a skiing vacation to Vail, Colo.

He was an excellent skier, a sport he had learned as a child. He was going down a hill when other skiers cut in front of him. He swerved to miss the skiers as well as a row of six pine trees when something caused him to flip over and his head struck a tree. He was knocked unconscious and remained in a coma until his death Sunday. He had been in the Lake Erie Rehabilitation Institute in Erie, for three months.

In 1972, Mr. Rothenbuhler established his own firm to process cheese and sell at wholesale. He was president of Hans Rothenbuhler Son. He continued as general manager of the co-op. The annual Middlefield Swiss Cheese Death Notices BYRNE MARGARET E.
